It can take the Sopranos-esque beautiful Jerseyness of Christie or a more refined intellectual form, but as my friend T.
Really interesting article about the physical prowess of our more “primitive” ancestors, even those still among us. I haven’t read the book yet, but if the article portrays it well, the author has avoided one of the primary reasons for the difference in performance- diet. Ancient man and modern hunter/gatherers like the Aborigine eat in a way ergonomic to their evolution. We fill up on dairy and grains & they eat every part of a kangaroo. Just what is health food? If you want the other half of the story to why this is so, read Cordain and Cordain with Friel. While you’re at it, check out Taubes. I am currently reading the bombshell indictment of modern nutrition research & it’s dark alliance with ideological government agenda- very very interesting. Larger review coming later when I’m done with that.

And on the note of exercise, I eavesdropped on a beginners swim lesson at the local lap pool last night and the snippet of advice fixed a hitch in my crawl stroke that has dogged me for over two years. I should have got a coach a long time ago. Now, I can’t get enough of the pool. 40 is going to be much lighter and more flexible than 39!

Great article about stress and neuroplasticity. The author points out how little our stress function has evolved, but the reality is, most of us have not evolved much beyond the hunter/gatherer phase. We are genetically 99.992% identical to a hunter/gatherer. So, we need to use our modern knowledge and civilization to hack our lives to be ergonomic with our genetics. There is a very long blog needed for this concept, but a few links will give you self starters the raw data and material.

Now, they say that as you get older, your parents seem wiser. Well, I can’t say that has exactly been completely the case for me, but a related phenomena has come about. The older I get, the more I quote my dad. So, here’s a little Father’s Day quote from my dad. It resides on the giant quote wall in my coffeehouse, and you can see it in person there for the next week. For those with bad eyes, it reads:

“A man with an experience is never at the mercy of a man with an opinion.” -Mike Whaley

So, how’s that for a decent and creative Father’s Day gift. Better than a bad tie and cheaper to ship than a six-pack. I love ya Pop!
