ZENIT - What Is a Catholic University?

Here is a great little homily from Cardinal Arinze about the nature of a Catholic University, delivered at Christendom College. I had the pleasure of taking a class from a former CC professor, Dr. Jonathan Reyes, during my brief and somewhat tragic stint in Colorado,  at the Augustine Institute in Denver, which he founded. Though my own alma mater supposedly has a rivalry with CC, though it never made itself known to me, short of one clever prank during the “Mid-Day Report,” I found much in common with what I heard about it and was quite intrigued by an introduction to the writings of it’s founder, Dr. Warren H. Carroll. Along with the recent Papal Address to Catholic Educators at CUA, the bar has been raised on the American Catholic academy by reminding it of its calling and setting forth that high calling as a standard against which to measure its current state. In addition to that, it afforded me the chance to write this blog, in which Tumblr’s extremely easy UI has allowed me to set a new record on the number of links inserted into the text. Oh, what the heck, since we’re having a linkfest on Catholic Education, let’s let John Paul the Great have his say.
