These are musings/artifacts from the wanderings of a distracted visionary developing his trigger finger. Think of them not as the dictations of a man with it all together, but rather, communications tapped out in half-remembered morse code, from a Jonah in a whale, not sure where he is headed, but assuming there's a destination. Hence, like a Jonah, I send out a nice mix of insights from the inside and cries for help. andrewmwhaley@gmail.com.

WorldWatch - October 5, 2008 - Would the Last Honest Reporter Please Turn On the Lights? - The Ornery American

This article does the job of pimpslapping the entire American media and giving a 10,000 ft. primer on the causes of the big bailout in one fell swoop. Brilliant! And- he’s a card carrying Democrat, so no partisan finger pointing. Enjoy! (oh, and by the way- I’m back.)

A Truck That Runs on Coffee Grounds (and How Wood-Gas Powers Cars With Garbage) : Gas 2.
All you people who consider yourselves eco-holier-than-thou just because you use coffee grounds in your mulch can bow down to this guy. I always knew coffee would save the world, I just figured it would be via the stimulation of the intellect. It would seem coffee can have a more hands on approach. Thanks to James Hoffman over on the Jimseven.com blog for the link.

TED | Talks | Bono: TED Prize wish: Join my call to action on Africa (video)
Say what you want about Bono. Say what you want about the humanist elite and their preaching to their own choir over at TED. But, What Bono says here, about Africa, is very true and a good reality check for all us rich American Catholic types. Plus, if you look carefully, he’s still wearing that black rosary that JPII gave him. “Am I buggin’ ya? I dunt mean ta bug ya.”

The New Criterion

Wow, seems like providence has handed me something of a cornocopia of great writing on education today. I’ve only skimmed these, but check out the The New Criterion online. More great thoughts about Newman’s “Idea of a University” by Roger Kimball and a great article by the always insightful and prophetic Victor Davis Hanson. I need to get a subscription for the shop!

FIRST THINGS: On the Square » Blog Archive » Personality, Place, and Catholic Education

This a great reflection on the personal nature of the true mission of Catholic education, using B16’s address to Catholic educators as a launchpoint and Newman as the inspiration. Good stuff.
